Do you need some rhythm in your life?

Have you ever sat on the sidelines of a drum circle or jam session, unsure of how to join in? Do you ever look at the drummer in the band and think, “Wow, the drummer is the coolest (they are). I wish I could do that!”? Do you want a deeper understanding of rhythm that makes singing, dancing, drumming, and even walking more fun, groovy, and natural?

I have just the course for you! In this 7 week rhythmic journey we will explore drumming and percussion in ways that can be applied anywhere –  your body, voice, the kitchen table, drums, shakers, pots and pans… your imagination is the limit!

Session structure

Each week will begin with stretching and warming up the body. We will then introduce the concept for the week and begin learning it rhythmically, and then transition to playing it on instruments. We will spend time playing the parts together as a group and introduce concepts like calls, breaks, and solos before closing. Instruments will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own!

Curriculum

My goal with this course is that you walk away after 7 weeks feeling confident about sitting in on percussion during a drum circle, jam session, or playing with a friend. The curriculum is focused on developing a rhythmic language that can be applied in any situation. We will cover time signatures, rhythmic music theory and notation, drumming traditions, contemporary drumming, and most importantly, groove and feel. Get ready to have fun and let loose – I’m looking forward to jamming with you!

About your Instructor

Hi, my name is Christian and I have loved drumming for as long as I can remember!

I have studied and performed in many different styles over the years, including symphonic percussion, marching band, drum set, West African, Afro Latin, Brazilian, and Celtic. Most recently I have had the opportunity to perform with Mambembe Brazilian drum group and The Empire Marching Elite marching band at parades, events, Brooklyn Cyclones games, and even at Radio City Music Hall!

I believe that rhythm is something universally human, as natural as our heartbeat. Something that each of us has within us, ready to unlock and tap into. I enjoy teaching others the art of drumming, and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience with you.
